Learning to play jazz chords seems to be a mystery to so many piano players who are in love with the sounds. That's why I developed a one-off evening workshop to show pianists (and players of any instrument) how to make the transition to jazz and to teach them the basics.

Who is the workshop for?

All of those listed below, who love jazz and want to know how to get started:

  • Classical pianists or other piano players.
  • People who are self taught and need help to get to the next step
  • Players of other instruments who want to learn about chords/jazz piano playing

What Level Should I be?

Ideally you will have played at least enough to know some major scales and have experimented with simple chords on the piano.

What will I learn?

By the end of the workshop you will be clear about what needs to be in place and how to start learning it in order to become a fluent jazz player. I will give you some great sounding things to get started with and put you on the right track.

  • You will have learned how to find some basic jazz chords at the piano and you will have tried some of them out as there will be other pianos around
  • You will understand some baics of jazz chord sequences
  • You will have some things to go away and practice

How can you help?

I have helped thousands of people over the last 15 years all over the world to get into this wonderful art form and to play to a high standard. My students have ranged from complete beginners to teachers, composers and performers. Despite my lack of grey hair, I have been playing for over 25 years - I am not a newbie or a college course trying to teach what's easy to explain rather than what's important to a jazz musician. I have lost count of the amount of people who have come to me, fairly confused (although with large folders full of paper) and still unable to do anything important after reading the well known books or  attending the usual jazz courses. I will show you exactly what I teach my 1-2-1 students all over the world to help you to get to the next step with understanding and playing jazz chords.

What will happen on the day?

  • I will talk and demonstrate principles to show you how to find chords, get from one chord to another, split chords between two hands
  • You will learn by watching and listening to me and each other and will get a chance to try things out on the other pianos that will be around.
  • I guarantee that you will go away with a much better understanding of jazz chords than you arrived with despite any differences in the ability of the attendees.
